Elections

  • A General Municipal Election is held in November of each odd year for council members.
  • There are five council members.
  • Council members serve at large, compared with cities whose council members serve in districts.
  • Council members serve a four year term.
  • There are no term limits for council members.
  • A general municipal election is held every two years on odd numbered years, alternating, between two and three positions each cycle. In November 2011, Visalia voted for two full termĀ  council member positions, and inĀ November 2013, they will vote on the remaining three.
  • To qualify, a candidate must be a registered voter of the City of Visalia. To become a registered voter of the City of Visalia one must reside within the city limits, be at least eighteen years of age, and register to vote with Tulare County Elections Office.
  • After the election every two years, council members elect one member to serve as mayor and one to serve as vice-mayor.
    • Time commitment of a council member? The Visalia City Council normally meets the first and third Monday's of each month at 4:00 p.m. In addition to the regularly scheduled council meetings, council members will generally spend time reviewing material in preparation for the meetings, attend additional meetings as required, and may call for some travel.
