GIS is often described as a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. -ESRI
The goal of the GIS Division is to deliver accurate and up to date geographic information resources for the City of Visalia’s staff and its citizens. We enthusiastically offer and promote GIS as a method to efficiently address complex geographically related issues and help support better decision making processes through the use of geospatial technologies.
GIS technology allows users to investigate and question the relationships created by linking databases to locations or places. The results can then be displayed in the form of a map, graph or a tabular report. This computer driven system helps the City analyze and manage vast amounts of geographically oriented data obtained both internally, and from county, state and federal agencies. The power and flexibility of GIS can now be widely used to support problem solving in both the private and public sectors.
