Assistant Fire Marshal Kurtis Brown, began his career with the Visalia Fire Department in July of 2007. He promoted to the rank of Assistant Fire Marshal in November 2011. He is State certified as a Fire Prevention Officer, Fire Protective Specialist, California Fire Code Inspector, and is a Plans Examiner. His responsibility is to supervising the Fire Prevention Division which includes Weed Abatement/ Property Maintenance program, Fireworks program, Public Education program, Special Events, Site Plan Review, and the inspection program for both the Fire Prevention and Fire Suppression staff.

Fire Inspector Melissa Novak, began her career with the Visalia Fire Department in January of 2011.  She was a student in the Fire Technology Program at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. She is currently State certified as a Fire Prevention Officer and a California Fire Code Inspector.  She was previously a Reserve for multiple cities in California for a total of 4 years. As a Fire Inspector, Melissa Novak’s responsibilities consist of interpreting and enforcing the California Fire Code, California Building Code, and Title 19. The types of commercial buildings that are inspected annually by her involve assemblies, small businesses, mercantile, storage facilities, factories, and institutions. She has also assisted with the training of new fire inspectors in our department.

Fire Inspector Corbin Reed, began his career with the Visalia Fire Department as a Reserve Fire Fighter in June of 2009, and was hired as a Fire Inspector in December of 2010. He is a Golden West High School Alumni and graduate of the College of the Sequoias Fire Academy. Fire Inspector Reed has his Firefighter 1 and is a currently a student in the C.O.S. Fire Technology program. As a Fire Inspector, Corbin Reed’s responsibilities include fire inspection of commercial and multi-family building. During his fire inspections he looks at fire code compliance which includes exiting, electrical hazards, and fire suppression systems & equipment.
