 At Your Live Scan Appointment:

The Live Scan operator will enter your information from the submission form and capture the fingerprint images. The captured information is immediately transmitted to the Dept. of Justice over a data line.

The Live Scan technicians do not process the applications. The fingerprints are forwarded to the Dept. of Justice. If the applicant has not heard back from their agency within 30 days, they should have their agency file an inquiry with the Dept. of Justice. The applicant should not contact the Visalia Police Department. We do not have access to any records. Only the applicant or applicant's employer may contact DOJ.

If you are returning to be re-printed due to a DOJ or FBI rejection, you must bring a brand new form and a copy of the rejection notice with you. Frequently Asked questions:

  • I have already had a live scan done. Do I have to be fingerprinted again?

Yes, the goal of the live scan is to use the fingerprints to do the actual back ground check, not to obtain another set of fingerprints.

  • How long is this going to take?

On average the wait time to receive your results is about a 1-2 weeks, depending on the flow of live scan applications to the Department of Justice. Also, the results of your criminal history check will not be sent directly to you. They will be sent to your employer and it is up to them to contact you.

  • How do I check the status of my fingerprint submission?

If a requesting agency does not have results yet and digital Live Scan fingerprints were submitted, you can use the automated telephone system (916-227-4557) to check on your submission. You will need the following information: (1) your date of birth; and (2) the 10-digit Automated Transaction Identifier (ATI) number that appears at the bottom of the Department of Justice form requesting Live Scan fingerprint background checks. The ATI number always appears in the following sequence: 1 LETTER; 3 NUMBERS; 3 LETTERS and 3 NUMBERS (EXAMPLE: I000ABC000).
