Fall and Winter Adult and Senior Programs

The Visalia Parks and Recreation Department is offering a New Men's & Coed Silver Softball League. The league will start Monday September 20, and will be played at the Plaza Park Softball Complex.  The league is offered for active adults ages 50 and over and the deadline to register is August 26, 2010. Coaches meeting will be held on September 13 at 6 p.m.  So if you thing you can still hit a slow pitch ball join us.  We have the perfect league for your men's or co-ed team!  Additionally, a new Coed Silver Soccer a 7 on 7 senior Soccer League will play on Friday nights. The league games start Friday September 17 and will be played at the Riverway Sports Park Fields.   The deadline to register for this program is August 26, 2010 and is offered to adults ages 50 and over. The coaches meeting will be on September 7 at 6:30 p.m. 

Research of yoga and its benefits has shown that it alleviates many senior health challenges.  This program offered by the Visalia Parks and Recreation Department Senior Center, for adults aged 55 years and over, is designed to increase muscle tone, stamina, posture, and balance.  Registration is at Anthony Community Center, 345 N. Jacob Street, Visalia; the first session meets 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoons from September. 16th through November 4th  while the second session meets Thursdays at the same time from November 11 through December 30.  The cost per person is $30.

The Visalia Senior Center invites all members of the community ages 55 and over, along with their spouse, caregivers or guests, to join us for lunch.  Come try the food of our new food vendor, Royal Dining Catering , socialize with others while enjoying a hot, balanced, nutritional mid-day meal.  Meals are served Monday through Friday from 12:00 noon to 12:30 pm.  The Meal cost is $3.50 for seniors and $ 4.50 for all others.

Reservations are required and must be made by 11:00 am one business day prior to the meal.

Special Events

The Visalia Senior Center will be hosting its 7th Annual Open House on Friday, September 24, 2010 from 1-4 p.m.  This event will feature informational booths from senior and adult providers and local businesses providing information on health issues, personal safety, recreation and other services available to seniors.  There will be music, refreshments, door prizes and a raffle. 

Come and enjoy the great outdoors in the beautiful scenic Sequoia National Park.  The City of Visalia Parks and Recreation Senior Center is offering three trips this fall to the Sequoias.  The first trip will be to the General Sherman Tree on Thursday September 2, the second to Moro Rock on Thursday, September 9 and the last will be to Crescent Meadow on Wednesday September 15.  All three trips include a sack lunch.  The cost is

$16.00 per trip and there is a limited number of spaces available, so make your reservation now. 

The Visalia Senior Center Golf Scramble will be held on Friday, October 22 at the Exeter Golf Course.  The scramble format allows the beginner and intermediate golfer to enjoy being part of a team. The scramble is for seniors ages 55 and over will begin at 9:00 am. Registration fee is $ 18 per person and includes green fees, cart, prizes and a delicious tri tip lunch.  Registration is limited reserve your slot now.

Programs & Classes

This fall we have a variety of ongoing, fun, active and enjoyable programs.  The Visalia Senior Center invites seniors to join the free weekly ongoing drop in programs. Our program offer seniors opportunities to participate in Table Tennis, Bunko, Poker, Line Dancing, Pinochle, Darts, Movies, Knitting and Sewing, Bocce Ball and WII games.  Program times vary from program to program.

¿Habla Espanol?  Come and learn with us at the Visalia Senior Center.  We will be practicing basic conversational Spanish. introductions, greetings, numbers, colors, shapes, food and basic information  Class is held on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.   The cost for this class is $35.00 per course.  The Fall Course is held from September 13 -  November 1 and the Winter Course is held from January 10 - February 28.

Starting September 14, the Visalia Parks and Recreation Department Senior Center is offering the following day and evening art classes: Tole Painting on Thursdays from 10am to 12:30pm; Watercolor on Wednesdays from 10am to 1:00pm; Ceramics on Tuesday from 10am to 1pm; and Oil Painting on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 ; and Charcoal Drawing on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm.. All art classes will be held at the Visalia Senior Center, there is a $35.00 fee for each class
